Norwich City's directors emerged from a lengthy board meeting last night with nothing decided - but with a lengthy list of issues they need to resolve before getting to grips with life in League One.

A speculation story which ran on Sky Sports News during the evening, suggesting that Bryan Gunn had been given the go-ahead to continue as manager, proved to be unfounded, though it was confirmed that he and his assistants Ian Butterworth and Ian Crook had all impressed when asked to set out their vision for the future to the board during the day.

No decision was made over the managerial position, which remains one of the key issues covered by seven action points listed in a statement issued after the marathon meeting had ended.

Indeed, the list makes it clear that the question of who takes charge of team affairs for the new season cannot be divorced from some of the other issues which need to be settled, most notably those concerning the search for fresh investment and who will actually be running the club from the boardroom.

After a traumatic few days which have brought an increase in demands for sweeping changes among those in charge, the statement revealed that the board members have made their own futures as important an issue as that of the manager.

Interestingly, they also revealed that, in an on-going series of meetings which they hope will try to put the club on course for a quick return to the Championship, the “type of players” who will be representing City will also be up for discussion.

This comes after a season in which City's heavy reliance on loan players, often at the expense of home- produced youngsters, became a huge bone of contention.

But it is difficult to imagine any decision being made on playing matters without input from the man who will be picking the team next season.

The City statement read: “Today we had a frank and productive meeting to discuss the way forward for Norwich City Football Club.

“There were a number of crucial issues to be resolved, including:

t The possibility of new external investment into the club

t The possibility of changes to the composition of the board of directors

t The appointment of a management team to lead us next season

t The financial position of the club

t The ramifications of this financial situation for the business as a whole

t The ramifications of this financial situation in relation to the size of next season's playing budget

t The type of players who will represent Norwich City next season

“We have made a good and solid start to tackling these issues and there will be changes at this football club. Today we met with Bryan Gunn, Ian Butterworth and Ian Crook and they set out their desire to help lead the club forward and their vision for the future if they are appointed. We were impressed as always by their passion and commitment - but no decision will be made today on the managerial position as some of the issues listed above need to be resolved first.

“The discussions started today will continue. When there is any further news to announce we will inform our supporters and the media.”
