City goalkeeper Robert Green is poised to get his dream move back to the Premiership - with Charlton Athletic.

The Canaries have confirmed that talks are under way with the London club over a move for the 26-year-old England international, and the deal could be completed today.

Manager Nigel Worthington said last night: “Talks are still ongoing and we hope to progress things over the next 24 hours. By then, hopefully, things will be clearer for me and for everyone.”

Green's hopes of a summer return to the top flight were dashed when he suffered a ruptured groin, playing for England B against Belarus at Reading in May. The injury required surgery and cost him his place in England's World Cup squad.

He has not played since, though he is making a good recovery and is back in training with the Canaries.

Worthington admitted he was already looking at bringing in another 'keeper if Green moved on - and some reports suggest a part exchange may be on the cards with Charlton, who have internationals Thomas Myhre (Norway) and Stephan Andersen (Denmark) at The Valley.

But this morning there were claims that Charlton's Premiership rivals West Ham are also interested in Green and could yet make a swoop for the 'keeper.

Green's departure would leave only current first-choice Paul Gallacher and 18-year-old Joe Lewis, yet to make a senior appearance, at Worthington's disposal.

City chief executive Neil Doncaster told the club's official website that talks with Charlton were taking place - but said suggestions the deal had already been concluded were wide of the mark.

He said: “We are indeed talking over a possible transfer of Robert Green to Charlton, but those talks are still at an early stage and no deal has yet been agreed. When and if there is any further progress to report we will let supporters know.”

One national newspaper report suggested the Addicks were willing to pay around £2m for Green, whose Carrow Road contract runs out next summer - though City have an option for a further year.

Meanwhile, Charlton manager Iain Dowie is staying tight-lipped on the deal despite being asked about it yesterday while working as a TV pundit.

Last week he signed Djimi Traore from Liverpool and Amady Faye from Newcastle for £2m each and said he was “working very hard on several other signings” and hoped to make “further announcements very soon”.

Dowie is believed to have made his move after losing out to Manchester City for the signature of Swedish international Andreas Isaksson from Rennes.

Sources in south London say Dowie is keen on Green despite making a bid for Isaksson, who is likely to finalise a £2m, three year deal in Manchester later today.

Another national newspaper report said West Ham boss Alan Pardew is keen on Green and is ready to pay £2m to secure his services in a move, which could see the 'keeper link up again with former City teammate Dean Ashton.

Pardew needs another stopper to compete with Roy Carroll at Upton Park and only has Jimmy Walker in reserve following Stephen Bywater's loan move to Derby and Shaka Hislop's switch to American side Dallas.

Green has made 241 senior appearances for City, the first of them in the East Anglian derby against Ipswich at Carrow Road in April 1999, when he was 19. He produced an outstanding display in a 0-0 draw.

He was in the City side that played Birmingham in the Division One play-off final at Cardiff in 2002 and, two seasons later, he was an ever-present in their Nationwide League title success.

Green made his England debut as a half-time substitute in a 3-2 win over Colombia in New Jersey in May last year.

He has not played for City since injuring his ankle in the pre-match warm-up at Sheffield Wednesday on Easter Saturday.

Worthington, meanwhile, flatly rejected reports that he was keen to sign 34-year-old former England international forward Darren Anderton, released by Wolves.

“No, you can put that one to bed,” he said.
