The stunning sight of a yellow wall at Wigan – Christoph Zimmermann cannot wait for Norwich City’s return to Championship battle.

The Canaries will take a 5,000-strong following to the DW Stadium on Sunday to take on struggling Wigan Athletic, sitting top of the second tier with just five games remaining.

And they will be hopeful of adding to the point they picked up at home to Reading in midweek – albeit after such a dramatic night left City with a sour taste as they conceded a 97th minute equaliser to the resolute Royals.

But Zimmermann only has eyes on the future – and a prize inching closer to City’s grasp.

“I think the away support this season has been outstanding all the way through, and this might be the absolute highlight – 5,000 travelling supporters,” said the City captain.

“And of course we will give everything to give them something to cheer about, which in the best case will be three points.

“It does feel close. We are six points ahead of Leeds and seven from Sheffield United, with five games to go. It’s a good point to start from.

“We need to take it as it is and if you’d said at the start of the season we would be in this position after 41 games, everyone would have taken it – and barely anyone would have believed it.

“It’s been good, this winning streak of eight in a row. That was outstanding. And we’d have been happy to make it nine, but still – we can also take a lot of confidence form the Reading game given how we played.”

City’s rise since the opening month of the Championship season has been stark – but so has the emergence of their current centre-back duo, with Zimmermann and Ben Godfrey now at the forefront of Daniel Farke’s starting XI as well as Norwich City’s title charge.

“I mean, the way this has developed was unpredictable for everybody,” added Zimmermann. “At the start of the season Ben and I were the ones playing in the cup but not in the league – and now we’ve started so many games together, it’s really great to play with him.

“He’s somebody who always puts his body on the line for the team, who always gives everything that’s in him. I think we both enjoy playing together.”
