Former Norwich City goalkeeper Remi Matthews is training with Ipswich Town following his release from cash-strapped Bolton Wanderers.

The Gorleston-born keeper joined Bolton in 2018 after the Canaries opted to sign Tim Krul rather than giving the City academy graduate the number one shirt.

Matthews featured heavily in pre-season in 2019, only for Daniel Farke and Stuart Webber to elect to sign the Dutch international - who has been named as the winner of the club’s annual Player of the Season award.

He was one of only a handful of players who remained with Wanderers during their financial troubles last summer and was one of the club’s standout players last season despite their eventual relegation to League Two.

The East Anglian Daily Times report that the 26-year-old received permission from manager Paul Lambert after asking to link up with the Blues to keep himself fit as he looks for a new club.

It remains unclear whether Matthews will become the latest player to cross the divide - with goalkeeper Andy Marshall famously joining City’s bitter rivals after rejecting a new contract after being handed the Barry Butler Memorial Trophy in 2001.

The report suggests that Matthews has interest from Championship clubs as well as abroad - with Town possessing three options between the sticks in Tomas Holy, Adam Przybek and Harry Wright.

Former City boss Lambert held an interest in Matthews last summer, but instead opted to raid former club Wolverhampton Wanderers to secure the loan signing of Will Norris.

The Tractor Boys finished 11th in League One - their lowest finish since 1953. Despite that, the Scot was publicly backed in June and looks set to be given a fresh opportunity to try and secure promotion from the third tier.

Lambert signed a fresh five-year contract at Portman Road in January - but will need to turn the tide quickly to escape more criticism from supporters.
