Norwich City have been drawn at home to Barnet in the Carling Cup first round.Ties will be played in the week starting Monday, August 13.The Canaries last met Barnet in the competition in 1997, when they lost 4-3 over two legs.

Norwich City will face Barnet at home in the first round of the Carling Cup with manager Peter Grant only too aware of the dangers posed by the Bees in the competition.

Grant will warn his side against complacency in the tie, due to take place in the week starting August 13, as he was part of a City side unceremoniously dumped out of the league cup by Barnet in 1997.

Norwich were 2-1 up from the first leg at Carrow Road thanks to goals from Iwan Roberts and Neil Adams, and looked well on course to reach the second round.

A Roberts strike early on in the second leg at Underhill put the Canaries in the box seat but goals Greg Heald and Sean Devine (2) gave Barnet a shock 4-3 aggregate win.

Grant remembers the night well as it was only his second appearance for Norwich after a £200,000 summer move from Celtic.

“I think I'd played one league game against Crewe on the Saturday and then I found myself at Underhill on the Tuesday,” he said. “We had won the first leg 2-1 and to be honest we were cruising in the next game 1-0 up on the night and then bang, bang, bang and we were out!

“I couldn't believe it to be honest because we'd actually been playing pretty well. I remember the game and the tie just seemed to slip away pretty suddenly.”

Grant is determined for his Norwich side not to suffer the same fate and insisted that Barnet's League Two status will count for nothing when the teams face each other.

“Their position means nothing at all,” he said. “Barnet will be out to attack us at Carrow Road and I bet they're happy with the draw.

“We will give them full respect and take nothing for granted. If you take things for granted then that's when you lose games - so we have to be professional, motivated and concentrated.”

The 41-year-old Scot added that he will be putting out a strong side against the Bees and hopes to go a long way in the competition.

“I said last year and I'll say it again, we will be going out to win every competition we enter, and that certainly includes the Carling Cup.

“Last year we got knocked out on penalties at Port Vale, which was disappointing, but injuries aside we put out a strong side that bight and that's because we wanted to progress.

“The same will be true this season and hopefully it will be a good cup tie against Barnet.”
