Norwich City boss Peter Grant was today linked with a move for Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Alexander.

The Bluebirds shot-stopper is out of contract in the summer and will be available on a free transfer after rejecting a new deal with the Welsh club.

Grant could move for Alexander after the 29-year-old admitted that he is pleased to be linked with the Canaries.

“I am obviously flattered to be linked with a club like Norwich City but while I'm under contract at Cardiff my thoughts are 100 per cent behind them and promotion.

“What will happen in the summer, will happen. However, it seems that my future will not be at Cardiff City next season.”

Alexander, who Grant described as pulling off two “world class” saves from Dion Dublin and Simon Lappin in the 1-0 defeat at Ninian Park earlier in the season, has fallen out with manager Dave Jones and looks set to be on his way out at the club.

He is the longest serving player at Cardiff but turned down the Welsh side's offer of a new contract before Christmas and Jones has admitted he is resigned to letting his No.1 leave the club.

“We've made an offer and that's that,” said Jones. “The days have gone when this club overpaid players. It's up to Neil. He has every right to turn it down.”

Jones even publicly criticised the player on Saturday after Cardiff's 1-0 defeat to Sunderland, saying that it was Alexander's error that cost them the points.

“Neil Alexander is a shot-stopper and it was a shot he should have stopped. Simple as that.”

Grant could see Alexander as the answer to his goalkeeping problems with the City boss selecting no less than five different goalkeepers in the City first team this season with on-loan Fulham man Tony Warner the current first choice.

However, Warner's loan spell only runs until the end of the season and it is unclear whether he will be available to make his move permanent.

Much hinges on whether Grant can convince Celtic to let goalkeeper David Marshall come back to Norwich next season after the 21-year-old's loan spell was cut short after he picked up an injury in the FA Cup tie against Chelsea.

Marshall's future with the Glasgow club hinges on whether current first choice Artur Boruc moves in the summer with the likes of AC Milan and Bayern Munich rumoured to be interested in his services.

If Boruc does leave for one of Europe's top sides then the way will be clear for Marshall to become first choice at Parkhead - scuppering Grant's plans to bring him back to Norfolk next season.

If this was to be the case then Grant could turn to Alexander to solve his goalkeeping dilemma.
