Norwich City Ladies’ dream of matching their male counterparts to complete a Canaries promotion double ended in disappointment yesterday.

They lost 5-1 to Havant & Waterlooville at Enfield in their play-off semi-final for a place in the National League Southern Division.

City went two goals down early but fought strongly, Paige Shorten pulling a goal back from the penalty spot and then hitting the bar just before the interval.

In the second half, however, their increased efforts to draw level left them vulnerable to counter-attacks and they conceded three more goals.

“The girls have given it everything,” said joint manager Emma Fletcher. “We’re disappointed but hopefully they will come away having realised how far they have come in a short space of time – and be able to go that extra step or two further next season.”
