Norwich City players will wear a special limited edition shirt for their FA Cup third round match in January - to mark the 50th anniversary of the club's great giant-killing run.

The shirt was unveiled yesterday when it was modelled by midfielder Sammy Clingan at the Canary store in The Mall, at a launch also attended by 1958-59 hero Terry Allcock. It will be worn by the first team - colour clash permitting - on the weekend of January 3, along with black shorts as worn by the team that reached the semi-finals of the competition as a third division side.

An anniversary dinner will also be staged to honour the surviving members of Archie Macaulay's famous team.

The commemorative shirts follow the original 1958-59 design and, by agreement with club sponsors Aviva, there is no sponsors' logo. They also feature a green V-neck and sleeve trim and distinctive period badge design.

Said Allcock: “It brings back some marvellous memories. I'm surprised at the material - I thought ours were a little bit thicker than that. It's a great replica and it's going to be interesting to see the reaction from the public, I think.

“It's an excellent idea and I'm sure the club is grateful to the FA and to Aviva for giving them permission to reproduce that. I only hope that we have a good draw and we don't draw Wolverhampton or Blackpool, someone where we have to change colours anyway.

“It will be a marvellous occasion. We had the 40th anniversary and now we have the 50th anniversary but unfortunately one or two of my colleagues have passed on since that time. Being one of the younger members of the team, it's nice to still be about and capable of seeing the present generation play.”

Director of sales and marketing, Andrew Cullen, said: “We are delighted to honour our 1958-59 heroes 50 years on. Their achievement as a third division side reaching the FA Cup semi-final made them inspirational legends and created one of the finest ever romantic stories from the FA Cup.

“Their giant-killing exploits did so much to capture the imagination of so many throughout the country and they became wonderful ambassadors for our fine city and county. We are indebted to them all and look forward to once again celebrating their achievements in a unique and special way next January.”

A total of 959 shirts are available to pre-order on a first come, first served basis (shirt size subject to availability), costing £35 for adults' shirts and £25 for children's shirts. Season ticket-holder and membership discounts will also be available.

t Supporters will also have the opportunity to buy the new shirts worn by the players through an auction after the FA Cup third round tie. Shirts bought will also be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity featuring a 1958-59 team photograph.

The anniversary dinner will take place in the Norfolk Lounge, Carrow Road, on Friday, January 16 (7.30pm). Tickets for the dinner can be ordered, priced at £45 each or £400 for a table of ten (VAT included). Other events are being arranged for January 17, when City play host to Barnsley. More details will be announced later.

Supporters can pre-order their 1958-59 commemorative shirt in time for Christmas at the Canary stores at Carrow Road and The Mall, online at www.canaries.co.uk and by phone on 0844 826 1902.
