Norwich City Under-21s will take on a team packed with Canaries connections in the Papa John’s Trophy second round, after being drawn against Russell Martin’s MK Dons.

The young Canaries sealed progress to the knockout stage as they finished second in their group behind Cheltenham Town, having won 3-2 at Plymouth and 5-0 at Newport County in the group stages.

That meant an away tie against one of the southern area group winners and Friday evening’s draw pitted them against the Dons, who City legend Martin steered to safety in League One last season.

Martin’s also has his former Norwich team-mates Cameron Jerome and Andrew Surman in his squad, as well as Canaries striker Carlton Morris on loan. Louis Thompson is also on loan at Stadium MK but is out until next year with a hamstring injury.

The game is due to be played on December 8 or 9, with City’s first team due to be at home to Nottingham Forest on Wednesday, December 9 in the Championship.

Former Canaries striker Jerome recently spoke about his belief that it was “written in the stars” that Martin would one day manage Norwich, with the 34-year-old now having the chance to impress against his former club in the last 32 of the Trophy.

The former Scotland defender made 309 appearances for City between 2009 and 2018 and enjoyed a celebration match alongside Wes Hoolahan at Carrow Road in May 2019, with almost 20,000 supporters attending an exhibition legends match to raise funds for various charities - and celebrate the Canaries winning the Championship title.

Meanwhile, City striker Tyrese Omotoye has been nominated for the Papa John’s Trophy Player of the Round, having scored four goals during the group stages, including his hat-trick at Newport.

Omotoye, 18, is up against Peterborough’s 17-year-old midfielder Flynn Clarke, Cheltenham defender Dan Bowry, Fleetwood striker Harvey Saunders and Sunderland midfielder Josh Scowen (Sunderland). Click here to vote.
