Norwich City have been warned not to make an attempt for Bristol City striker Steve Brooker.

The Robins' chairman Steve Lansdown has dismissed reports linking the Canaries with a move for the 25-year-old, who has two years left on his contract and is negotiating with manager Gary Johnson over a new deal at Ashton Gate.

Lansdown said: "I've not heard from them - nor has Gary Johnson or Steve's agent.

"We don't need to sell players, but I'm not going to deny that if someone offered mega-mega money, then we'd have to consider it."

Former Port Vale forward Brooker was the Robins' player of the year last season but Lansdown has rejected comparisons with last year's £1m sale of star striker Leroy Lita to Reading.

He explained: "We don't need to sell - whereas last year with Leroy we did have to - and I have no intention of doing it.

"Steve is a key part of our squad, and as far as I'm concerned he'll be leading the line next season."

Brooker - who stands at 6ft tall - netted 16 times for the Bristol club last season as they finished ninth in League One, six points outside the play-offs.

He has made 73 appearances for the Robins, scoring 32 goals, after joining them from Port Vale for £150,000 in 2004. He appeared for the Valiants 151 times and bagged 40 goals.
