Norwich City could receive 1m from Coventry City after the long-running Sammy Clingan saga finally reached a conclusion yesterday.

A fortnight after the two cities agreed a fee, it is Clingan yesterday signed a three-year deal at the Ricoh Arena, subject to passing a medical, with the Canaries earning a initial sum believed to be around 650,000 which will go into manager Bryan Gunn's transfer coffers.

However, Norwich have also made sure there are plenty on add-ons to the deal, and sources close to the Sky Blues suggest those extras will make the deal worth up to a possible seven figures for the Canaries over the next 12 to 18 months.

It is a good return for City on a player who cost them nothing when he joined on a Bosman-style free transfer from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2008.

The Northern Ireland midfielder was one of City's players of the season, but he was unable to prevent Norwich from slipping into League One in May.

Coventry were the front runners for his signature when the Canaries relegation was confirmed, although Sheffield Wednesday were also rumoured to be interested in the 25-year-old's services when it became clear he wanted to leave Norfolk for pastures new after 43 games and six goals in a yellow shirt.

But despite, Norwich and Coventry coming to an agreement over the transfer fee earlier this month, the move appeared to be in the balance when Sky Blues boss Chris Coleman accused Clingan's representatives of muddying the waters over personal terms for the former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chesterfield player.

The two parties have now cleared the air and agreement has been reached, with the Sky Blues having money to spend after selling highly-rated 23-year-old left-back Danny Fox to Celtic yesterday for a fee believed to be in excess of 2m.

Clingan will now try to reach the same fitness levels of his new team-mates having not featured in any of Norwich's pre-season friendlies this summer.

Indeed, the Belfast-born star has not been seen at the Colney training centre for a while.

That's not been the case for another likely departure, however, with Burnley target Darel Russell the first player out onto the training pitch yesterday morning.

Russell has been pinpointed by Clarets boss Owen Coyle as a key component to his side's bid for survival in their first season in the Premier League.

As yet, the two sides have not reached an agreement over a transfer fee for the 28-year-old who will enter the last year of his Norwich City contract this season.

The midfielder's agent, Gary Mellor has urged the Canaries to drop their asking price for the former Stoke player, after Burnley's initial bid was refused.

But with the Clarets currently on a pre-season tour of America, any deal for the London-born star could still be days away.
