Bungay Town Ladies finally won their end-of-season Challenge Cup competition by defeating Wymondham Town 3-1 in an entertaining final on a windy evening at the Maltings Meadow.

This enjoyable competition played over three Wednesday evenings involving local ladies’ teams from Norfolk and Suffolk began with Wymondham getting to the final by overcoming Attleborough and Waveney Wanderers and then Bungay Town defeating Suffolk team Bacton.

In the final Wymondham took an early advantage with Gemma Hamilton scoring from a clever chipped pass to beat Emma Harvey in the Bungay goal, but Bungay soon levelled with Imogen Williams’ strike from a Amber Rowland through ball, and then taking the lead when Lauren Purling went past three defenders on a superb wing run and cut the ball back for Michelle Stanborough to score from close range.

After the break and going against the strong wind Bungay’s back line and midfield held Wymondham well at bay and managed to break forward at regular intervals going close when Imogen Williams’ chipped attempt came back off the inside of the post and Michelle Stanborough breaking though only to see her shot drift wide, but they finally put the game safe when the hard-working Stacey Newrick capped a fine game by following in when her first attempt was saved to put in the rebound.
