Norwich City boss Daniel Farke is not expecting to see a huge windfall from Jacob Murphy’s sale.

The 22-year-old sealed a big money move to Premier League Newcastle United on Wednesday, for a reported fee that could rise above £12m.

Farke is confident the Canaries will move back into the transfer market ahead of the new Championship season but admitted after a 2-0 friendly win over MSV Duisburg that he is working to a tight budget.

“I am too long in this business. I am realistic. There are some clubs with more opportunities than us in this regard,” he said. “You always want the best players and if it is possible, to spend a lot of money, but I knew the situation with the club when I arrived. It was important to lower the wage bill for the future of the club. I want to be responsible for this change and I will not be unrealistic. I want some good players and we want to improve the squad.

“I wish him all the best. Jacob was a fantastic player with much potential and for sure we would like to have him in the squad but when there is a great opportunity for him and a big transfer fee sometimes you have to realise that as a club. It is a good sign for our academy that we can produce these players. It is a big challenge for him and I hope he continues to develop.”

Farke was impressed by City’s composed display against a Duisburg side who had a man sent off in the first half.

“Yes, I am very happy with that against a really solid team from the second division in Germany,” he said. “The guys are also close to starting their league. We had to do this test working in the training camp and working very hard. I felt we deserved the win. We were very concentrated. We could have scored more goals so overall I am happy. The most important thing for me was I knew physically we were not in our best shape but after the first 10 minutes when we gave away some chances we controlled the game totally. We gave them maybe one header in the next 80 minutes.

“We know it is pre-season so I don’t get too deep into this result but the attitude to defend was excellent. I went to the referee and asked him if he could the change the red to a yellow card as I wanted to play 11 versus 11. I was pretty sure Duisburg would defend far more compactly. It is more a realistic test for us and I was pretty sure Duisburg would defend far more compactly and we would have less space to create chances. That was a little bit of a problem for us.”
