Manager Paul Lambert's attempts to chop and change his Norwich City squad around came to nothing as the summer transfer window closed yesterday with no fresh faces arriving before the 5pm deadline.

There were reports last night that Lambert had a bid rejected for Swindon winger Anthony McNamee, while sources in Scotland claimed Aberdeen were interested in City teenager Luke Daley.

Neither happened, and as the deadline passed it meant out-of-favour forward Wes Hoolahan and central defender Gary Doherty remain City players for the time being, despite Hoolahan being linked with Swansea and Crystal Palace and Doherty with Malky Mackay's Watford.

Neither player was in the 16 for last night's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie at home to Brentford.

Mackay did allow centre-half Mike Williamson to move to Portsmouth yesterday for a fee which could rise to 3m, but did not use any of that money to bring in Doherty.

Darel Russell, who had been linked with Premier League Burnley, also remains at Carrow Road - and made his first start under Lambert in last night's 1-0 win.

However, there is still scope for Lambert to make changes, with a week's cooling-off period before the loan window opens.

Lambert allowed striker Kris Renton to join Brechin on loan on Monday, but the only major departure was veteran defender Dejan Stefanovic, whose contract was terminated by mutual consent.

The other main piece of business was the extension of goalkeeper Fraser Forster's initial one-month loan deal to January 2.

“He did well coming in on Saturday at very short notice and showed he is a very capable goalkeeper,” said Lambert, who nevertheless recalled Ben Alnwick last night. “We needed cover due to Ben Alnwick's injury, giving us more options.”
