Derby County have failed in their appeal to the Football Association, in a bid to get Jacob Butterfield’s Carrow Road red card overturned.

The 26-year-old ex-Canaries midfielder was sent off in the second half of City’s 3-0 win over the visiting Rams, after an ill-judged lunge on Wes Hoolahan.

Referee Darren Bond showed the card after 66 minutes in the game, with City already 1-0 to the good thansk to the first goal of Nelson Oliveira’s eventual hat-trick for the home side.

Butterfield received a straight red card for serious foul play and will now serve a three-game ban, following the appeal being dismissed by the FA.

City suffered the same fate with Robbie Brady after he was sent off for a challenge on Ryan Woods in their New Year’s Eve goalless draw at Brentford.

City appealed that decision but it was rejected by the FA’s disciplinary committee, meaning Brady missed Monday’s victory and will sit out two more games before he can return.

Derby lodged their appeal on Wednesday lunchtime.

Hoolahan lost his shin pad in a tackle that saw Butterfield fly in on his former team-mate – although Rams boss Steve McClaren felt the decision was wrong immediately after the game.

“Butterfield’s feet were not off the ground and he got a little bit of the ball,” he said. “He also caught the player as well and because of that he falls down.

“I think the reaction of the player (Hoolahan) and the crowd, which I can understand, played a part in it.

“That was a big turning point, for me it was all about the sending off. We were up against a very good Norwich side, who have got one of the best squads in this division, and it was always going to be very difficult for us when we went down to 10.”
