Dereham Town 3, Newmarket Town 1
THE 123 Aldiss Park faithful had to wait until the second half for the Magpies to stamp their authority on Tuesday night's game and gain revenge for their 3-0 defeat at Newmarket in the last game they played. The win took Dereham up from 13th to ninth in the Ridgeons Premier Division.
Heath Preston missed an early chance for Dereham when he headed a cross wide. Play was even until home keeper John Higgs made a fine save from Paul Jones' goalbound side-footer. The Magpies had struggled with crosses and from a Jones centre in the 40th minute Andy Eady headed Newmarket into the lead from near the penalty spot, unchallenged.
Steven Bugg should have increased the Jockeys' lead five minutes after half-time when one-on-one with Higgs, but the keeper did well to keep out his effort.
Dereham equalised in the 58th minute when defender Daniel Buhlemann glanced home a Danny Beaumont free-kick.
Visting keeper Lee Hulyer did well to keep out a powerful Preston header while minutes later at the other end Joel Brien sent a
20-yarder inches over the bar as Dereham began to step up the pressure. Hulyer made another fine save from a Beaumont header before leaping to his left to keep out Sam Willis' low drive.
Dereham were awarded a penalty which resulted in a red card for Steven Bell for a second bookable offence. Beaumont made it 2-1 to the Magpies from the spot on 78 minutes.
Victory was sealed in the 89th minute when substitute Kenny Reeves cushioned a header into the path of Nicky Howell, who fired home from 18 yards.
