Norwich City will face Manchester United in their postponed FA Cup quarter-final before the end of June if football’s restart goes ahead successfully, it has been confirmed.

The Football Association has announced that quarter-final ties will be played across the weekend of June 27-28, with the Canaries due to host the Red Devils in the last eight, the club’s first appearance in the quarter-finals since 1992.

With City’s first Premier League fixture of the resumed season set to be on the weekend of June 19-21, they will then turn their attentions to cup action the following weekend - although knowing it will be without spectators due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With further details on venues and timings to be released in due course, the FA’s chief executive Mark Bullingham said: “We are pleased to agree the provisional restart date for the 2019/20 Emirates FA Cup. The competition has been an integral part of the English football calendar for nearly 150 years, and we’d like to thank the Premier League Executive and Clubs for their support in scheduling the remaining matches during this unprecedented time.

“This has been a difficult period for many people and while this is a positive step, the restart date is dependent on all safety measures being met. The health and wellbeing of players, staff and supporters remains our priority.”

The Canaries advanced to the quarter-finals with a 4-2 win at Championship side Preston in the third round, a 2-1 win at Premier League rivals Burnley in the fourth and then a penalty shoot-out win over Premier League big boys Tottenham in the fifth.

City’s quarter-final clash with United had originally been chosen for broadcast by the BBC prior to football’s suspension on March 13.

The other quarter-finals will see Leicester host Chelsea, Manchester City travel to Newcastle and Sheffield United entertain Arsenal.

The provisional dates for the latter stages have also been confirmed by the FA, with the semi-finals to be held on the weekend of July 11-12 and the final to be on Saturday, August 1.

So far there has been no suggestion that the semi-finals or final we’ll be moved away from Wembley, despite the games being expected to be played without spectators present.
