‘We are happy to give our fans this present’ - Daniel Farke salutes Norwich City’s support after Ipswich Town derby win

Daniel Farke dedicated Norwich’s latest Championship derby win over bitter rivals Ipswich Town to the travelling support at Portman Road.

James Maddison guided a sublime finish past Bartoz Bialkowski in the second half to extend City’s dominance in this cross-border tussle, that now dates back to a nine match unbeaten run since April 2009.

“We really have this feeling that it is something special. This is a special situation,” said Farke. “We all appreciate that. To do it with a derby win in such a close game and another clean sheet is always good.

“In a situation where we have so many setbacks with personal terms, I am really happy for the lads. Especially happy for our supporters.

“The support today was brilliant. It has been the same in recent weeks. We are really happy to give them this present. For that, it is a really good feeling.”

Christoph Zimmermann was forced off in the second period with a knee injury. Farke also confirmed Nelson Oliveira was poised to start but felt his troublesome groin this morning.

“We had to in the offensive areas without so many important lads,” said Farke. “Normally we start this game with Nelson, who was in brilliant shape, but in the morning he felt bad again after waking up. Some problems with his groin again. Although we had to do without Steven Naismith, Marley Watkins and Alex Pritchard and we had Josh Murphy on the bench with a broken toe.

“Then during the game Christoph went off after 65 minutes and we had to give Grant Hanley longer than we expected. You don’t want one of your most important defenders to drop out when you are leading. But the guys stood together with a big will to get the best result we could and for that I am pretty happy.”

Town chief Mick McCarthy was left to rue two big early chances when Jonas Knudsen clipped the inside of Angus Gunn’s far post with a rising shot before David McGoldrick headed over from barely six yards.

“The most disappointing aspect? Defeat,” he said. “i think they are a good side and when they can sit in, leave Cameron Jerome up front they are very well organised and difficult to break down. We have seen that throughout their performances. They have good players but for the first half we were the better side. We have just not took our chances, they have.

“McGoldrick has a great chance. Maybe if it s Joe (Garner) heading it then it’s in the net.”
