Wisbech Town chairman Paul Brenchley suggested yesterday that some of the £19million released from the sale of Fenland Council's housing stock should be used to buy Fenland Park, the club's former home.

Brenchley said he was disappointed the council had not yet reacted to his suggestions.

“I seem to have opened a can of worms by suggesting that FDC buy Fenland Park,” he told supporters on the club's website. “This was an idea on my behalf, but I just wanted to put it forward to FDC to see what their reaction was. I'm disappointed that FDC have, so far, not been in touch with me.”

He denied he wanted to use “taxpayers” money, as such but pointed out Fenland Council had recently sold the council housing stock for around £19 million.

“It must be a headache for FDC to work out where to invest that money, with the banking system as it currently is,” he said. “Wouldn't it be better to invest a small proportion of that money in four acres of prime building land in the middle of Wisbech? Some of that money could be recouped via rent for Fenland Park and by the disposal of the car park when the building market improves.”

Brenchley said Town's status as a limited company affected their ability to attract grant aid.

“However, changing that status is a difficult process, but the board are looking into it,” he said. “All is not lost on the FDC front. I am expecting a call from the Portfolio holder for Leisure. Unfortunately, if he dismisses the idea, it will be 'no go' - but at least we have tried.

“Despite the possibility of a return to Fenland Park, we continue to move forward with the new ground. My biggest concern regarding this is the astronomical quotes we are currently receiving for the project, for example £13,000 to lay on mains gas.

“Unfortunately this is a by-product of a monopoly which is unaffected by the current financial situation.”

Brenchley promised supporters he would answer questions from them at the club's next match on December 27. Both council leader Geoff Harper and other members of his cabinet dismissed the idea earlier this week.
