Fans of a non-league club in London were given a surprise when former Norwich City defender Sebastien Bassong appeared for pre-season action this weekend.

The former Newcastle and Tottenham centre-back only turned 34 in July but has played very little since being released by Norwich in 2017, having made 135 appearances for City and won the club’s Player of the Season award in the Premier League in 2013.

Bassong started for Haringey Borough, who play at step three of non-league in the Isthmian Premier Division, as they lost a friendly 3-1 to Hanwell Town.

It’s unclear if the former Cameroon international will stay with Haringey, having made three appearances for Greek side Volos during the first half of last season, after a brief spell at Peterborough United in League One during 2018-19.

He could be the latest in a long line of former City players to extend their playing days in non-league, such as Grant Holt and Simon Lappin at Wroxham currently.
