Darren Purse, a January target for Norwich City, has been released by Cardiff.

The 32-year-old was on the verge of becoming a Bryan Gunn signing during the January transfer window, but Cardiff's inability to find a replacement scuppered any move and the central defender had to pay out time at Ninian Park.

However, his four-year association with the Bluebirds has come to an end after boss Dave Jones' agreed to let his first Cardiff signing leave. Jones signed Purse from West Brom for 700,000 in 2005 and made 111 starts for the club.

Purse would be unlikely to settle for League One football following the Canaries' relegation from the Championship this month, leaving Sheffield Wednesday reported as his most likely destination.
