City goalkeeper Paul Gallacher's future could become a little clearer today when manager Nigel Worthington hold his weekly press conference.

Gallacher's contract expires at the end of the season and, with number one choice Robert Green having a monopoly on the keeper's shirt, Gallacher was expected to move back to his native Scotland.

However, the 26-year-old's fortunes have changed dramatically in the past week, with an ankle injury to Green handing the former Dundee United stopper a debut at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and another appearance on Monday, against Queens Park Rangers.

Gallacher excelled in both games - enough to suggest that the offer of a new contract may be on the table, with the opening round of talks due to take place yesterday.

Having had two years on the sidelines, behind Green and Darren Ward, Gallacher has suddenly been thrust into the spotlight.

“It's been fantastic - and it just goes to show how quickly things can change in football,” he told the clubs' website.

“I'm not getting too carried away - it's only been two games.

“The way football is right now, if anyone offers you a permanent contract you've got to consider it.

“So I'm more than happy to speak to the manager. After that it's just a case of sitting down with my family and weighing-up the pros and cons.

“Because of Robert's consistent form it has been very difficult for the likes of myself, Darren Ward and Joe Lewis to get an opportunity. And if we ever did manage to nudge Robert out of the way then it was always going to be a case of trying to grab any opportunity when it came with both hands.

“And my wife and I have both really enjoyed our time down here. As I say, it's just a case of sitting down with the manager and hearing what he has to say.”

Canaries legend Bryan Gunn, himself a former Scotland keeper, said Gallacher was facing a big decision over his future.

“We don't know what the Robert Green situation is,” said Gunn. “He is hoping to go to the World Cup in the summer with England and there obviously been rumours about his future and it is a difficult one for Paul.

“If Robert stays at the club he will be battling for the number one spot again and let's not forget about Joe Lewis coming through the ranks as well.

“There are going to be three goalkeepers potentially fighting for the number one spot.

“It is a big decision for Pail. It is frustrating being number two because you don't get a lot of action but let's hope he gets that contract sorted out and take it from there.”
