Norwich City - and in particular manager Peter Grant - will be determined to avoid a repeat of one of the club's most embarrassing defeats when the Carling Cup gets under way in August.

The Canaries have been drawn at home to Barnet in the first round. The tie will be played at Carrow Road in the week starting Monday, August 13.

The draw will bring back painful memories for Grant, however.

City last met Barnet in the competition in 1997, when they lost 4-3 over two legs.

The second leg, a 3-1 defeat at Underhill, was Grant's second match in City colours following his move from Celtic.

Norwich had won the first leg 2-1 at Carrow Road with goals from Iwan Roberts and Neil Adams.

Roberts scored again at Barnet to give Mike Walker's men a 3-1 aggregate lead, but Greg Heald reduced the arrears and two goals from Sean Devine sent them tumbling out of the competition.

Recalling that night 10 years ago, Grant told the club's official website: “I think I'd played one league game against Crewe on the Saturday and then I found myself at Underhill on the Tuesday. We had won the first leg 2-1 and, to be honest, we were cruising in the next game at 1-0 up on the night and then 'bang, bang, bang' and we were out!

“I couldn't believe it, to be honest, because we'd actually been playing pretty well. I remember the game and the tie just seemed to slip away pretty suddenly.”

The League Two club would not be under-estimated this time, said Grant.

“Their league position means nothing at all. Barnet will be out to attack us at Carrow Road and I bet they're happy with the draw,” he said. “We will give them full respect and take nothing for granted.”

Ipswich Town travel to Milton Keynes Dons in the first round.
