England's former Norwich City keeper Robert Green could seal a dream move if he excels at the World Cup.

Green has only 12 months left on his current West Ham deal and Hammers' co-owner David Gold has confirmed any contract talks over a new deal are on hold. Green is locked in a three-way fight with David James and Joe Hart to grab the number one jersey for England's World Cup bow tomorrow against the USA.

Gold admitted the Londoners might struggle to hold on to their shot stopper if he establishes himself as Fabio Capello's number one.

“At this stage we are not going to have talks with him about a new deal,” said Gold. “World Cups change lives. It's the global shop window and who knows what may happen. We could get amazing offers - offers you can't refuse. What do you do if Manchester United or Real Madrid, for example, come in offering millions of pounds?”

The Hammers chairman hinted new manager Avram Grant will have the final say on whether Green is part of his long-term plans.

“We have to see how Robert feels and consider the new manager's view,” said Gold. “He will take the squad on a pre-season tour and judge Robert with everybody else.”

Green is in line to earn his 11th cap against the Americans in Rustenberg with injury doubts over James. The former Canaries' trainee featured in the second half of England's midweek training run against the Platinum Stars after an impressive Wembley display in the farewell friendly against Mexico.

“If I'm playing then great, if I'm not playing then I'll be ready,” said Green. “That's the most you can do and the opportunities come few and far between in international football to impress so I just want to be prepared to take each chance when I can. I think it's a fairly unique position at the moment. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, we're yet to find out.

“I'm sure we're pushing each other as much as we can, which is the main thing. Whoever is going to be playing is going to be playing well, because he's kept two other guys out of the side. But the other two guys are going to have to support and encourage that guy. I'm sure that is what will happen come the first game against the USA. We'll wait and see. You can do as much as you can and that's all you can do.”

Former England keeper David Seaman has backed James to get the nod but insists Capello has selected the three best in the country.

“For me Capello has got the goalkeepers right,” he said. “There is a good contrast with David James, who has a huge amount of experience, Robert Green, who is pushing David and Joe Hart, who has had a superb season at Birmingham.

“I know Green has played the last few games but for me David James is first choice. Sam Allardyce has a great case for saying Paul Robinson should have been selected but by bringing Joe Hart in he can gain valuable experience.

“When I was in the squad (but not first choice) I still felt I was involved and it is a great experience. I know Hart is not going to get a game but if, God forbid, you had two goalkeeping injuries I wouldn't have any worries about Joe because of the season he has had at Birmingham. He is in form.”
