One of the first men to congratulate Robert Green on his World Cup call-up was Bryan Gunn, who went to the 1990 finals in Italy with Scotland.
Said former City goalkeeper Gunn: “It's a tremendous honour to be picked for your country for any international squad, but for a World Cup tournament that only comes along every four years it is wonderful.
“I thought when Robert first came into the team against Ipswich Town as a 19-year-old he didn't look out of place, he was very convincing. He had a head-to-head collison with his captain, Matt Jackson, and came off better, so I thought straightaway he was certainly tough enough to play at the top level.
“He's been very courageous if you look at the injuries he suffered as a youngster, notably to his wrist and back. He's shown a lot of hard work and courage to come through those and now he's got his reward and if he gets his chance he'll do a fantastic job for England - and that's a Scotsman saying that.”
