Norwich City will renew acquaintances with a number of old faces when they return to the Premier League – but for one ex-Canary in particular, a reunion will be something special.

Angus Gunn was born and brought up in Norwich and after a successful loan season at Carrow Road, joined Southampton last summer from champions Manchester City.

When the fixtures were released yesterday, Gunn's eyes turned immediately to the games against the Canaries - the first is on the south coast on December 4 and then a poignant return to Carrow Road on March 14.

City - who will feature in the new season's first Premier League game on Friday, August 9 at Champions League winners Liverpool - are clearly a club still close to Gunn's heart.

"Their season has been unbelievable, and I think the manager has done great," said the 23-year-old, who has yet to experience a game against his first club.

"They haven't even bought it [promotion] because they've spent under £5 million on the team, so it's unbelievable.

"It will be a great boost for them and it will be interesting to go back there and it's going to be an experience I will enjoy.

"You obviously look at the big games and when you go away to the big teams, but I'll definitely be looking for that game.

"Going home and seeing some familiar faces will be a really nice feeling."

Father Bryan will no doubt be a more-than-interested observer, but Angus says the City goalkeeping legend offers support rather than criticism.

"He comes to all the games, but he doesn't critique me or get involved too much," said the young Gunn.

"He is there as my dad and not as an ex-pro or anything like that. He is there to support me as a son which is good because he doesn't put me under any pressure or anything. He keeps it casual."

Gunn's immediate priority is the England-Under 21s Euro 2019 tournament this month, when the Young Lions will have to navigate their way out of a group that includes France, Croatia and Romania.
