Norwich City goalkeeper Robert Green looks set to sign for West Ham.

The Canaries have confirmed they have agreed a deal with the Premiership side which could be worth up to £2m.

At the same time, Charlton pulled out of the race for the England international after sources at the club said Green was not their first choice and they had merely made “an enquiry” about his availability.

And late yesterday they switched their attention elsewhere and signed Scott Carson on a season-long from Liverpool.

But now, London-born Green looks set to return to the Premiership - and play European football with the Hammers.

Green had his preliminary medical yesterday and the move was subject to him passing that and agreeing personal terms.

Green will link up again with former Canary and England squad member Dean Ashton and the news also appears to rule out a cash plus player deal between City and the Hammers after both clubs announced details of the transfer.

A statement on City's website said the deal would be worth up to £2m while the Upton Park club said it would eventually rise to £2m, suggesting a transfer with various appearance related add-ons, similar to the move which took Ashton to London from Norfolk in January.

“West Ham United can confirm that we have had a bid accepted by Norwich City for England goalkeeper Robert Green,” a statement from the Londoners said.

“The deal, which could eventually rise to £2m, is still subject to a medical and the player agreeing personal terms.

“West Ham United will make no further comment until the transfer has been officially finalised.”

If the move does go through, it seems likely City boss Nigel Worthington will have to dip into the transfer market himself to find a 'keeper.

Currently the club has just one 'keeper on the books with any league experience, Paul Gallacher, who has played just seven first team games for the Canaries while Joe Lewis has yet to figure in the first team despite several appearances on the City bench.

A move to the Hammers for London-born Green would end a City career that started in 1999 in the East Anglian derby against Ipswich at Carrow Road.

In all, the stopper has made 241 appearances for the Canaries and became only the 6th City player to be capped by England when he came on at half time against Colombia in the USA in June 2005.

He was also named as one of three 'keepers travelling to Germany for the World Cup finals in the summer but saw his dream wrecked when he ruptured his groin during the warm-up game for England B against Belarus.

Green is still recovering from the injury and has yet to make an appearance this term, although he has returned to light training at Colney.

Green would face a fight for the number one jersey at Upton Park. The current holder is Roy Carroll who signed from Manchester United at the start of last season and impressed in the last campaign but suffered with injuries which saw Shaka Hislop come into the side.

Hislop has moved to play in America, while another 'keeper, Stephen Bywater is currently on loan at Derby and Jimmy Walker is still at the club.
