King's Lynn boss Carl Heggs yesterday confirmed he is closing in on a Championship double loan swoop.

Heggs has targeted two highly-rated youngsters to bolster the club's Unibond Premier Division promotion push after a frenetic summer recruitment drive since his arrival at The Walks.

The Linnets' boss will hold further talks with the Championship club this week in a bid to seal deals for a wide player and cultured central defender.

"I'm just trying to tie that down but I'm confident we can," said Heggs.

"With Champion ship players it's hard to sell them dropping down to the Unibond.

"We have to understand how it works dealing with top clubs. There's also the possibility of another lad as well from the same club but as I've said it before I want 14 or 15 who can all do a job - not 19 average players.

"Give me another 2,000 on my budget and you can have a squad that size.

"I'm not saying we've haven't got a budget to go out and put a decent squad together. It's not just about the money - good players do not want to play in the Unibond.

"I'm happy I've got all the players I wanted and right now we're probably two or three short.

"We'll have a look at a few trialists but I'm not going to mug people off. We won't bring in anyone just to make up numbers."

Heggs wants former Norwich academy youngster Ross Kelly to stay at the club but confirmed young striker Dominic Dwyer had accepted an American scholarship offer.

"Dominic is a good lad but he's off to America and he knows if that doesn't work he can come back here," said the Linnets manager.

"I spoke to Ross and sold him what I'm trying to achieve and I've left it with him.

"Perhaps like many of the players who were here last year they have a slightly bad taste with how it all ended.

"I'm trying to sell them a Ford Escort now not a Rolls Royce Phantom."

Heggs also went on the offensive to counter critics of his abrasive management style.

"Please don't misunderstand me. I'm not arrogant," he said.

"I'm single-minded. I'm a winner and I have to be ruthless. If we get beat 10-0 it's me who gets fired.

"I want my team to be winners and we will prepare properly to give them every chance to go out and win football matches.

"For each home game the lads will report to the ground for 11am. We'll have a pre-match meal, work through a few set pieces, have a proper warm up, maybe even a rub down.

"We won't have players getting over here at 100mph and flying through the doors at 2.45pm.

"We might be non-league but non-league is not how I operate," he added.

Club officials are working on a prestige home friendly at The Walks for August 1 - but Heggs' approach to pre-season sparring is a simple one.

"If we lose every pre-season game and win the first league game then it's been a brilliant pre-season," said the former Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion and Northampton Town striker, who is registered as a player for the forthcoming campaign said.

"If the opposite happens then it's been a terrible one.

"We'll be using training sessions to get the lads organised but I'm not risking a calf or hamstring injury and losing my best players for six weeks.

"I want my first eleven nailed down for the last two games against Brackley and Halesowen.

"If we beat Redditch 5-0 next week in our first game or they beat us 5-0 it means nothing."
