Norwich City only need eleven points from their last 13 games to ensure their Coca-Cola Championship status - if the last six seasons are anything to go by.

The Canaries currently sit on 41 points after their thrilling 3-2 win against Luton Town on Tuesday night and, if you look at statistics from the last six Championship campaigns, no team with an end of season total of 52 points has been relegated.

This means that three wins and two draws should be enough for City fans to breathe a sigh of relief and start planning for life in the Championship next season.

Sky Sports pundit Tony Cottee, who covered City's win at Kenilworth Road, believes that 50 points will be enough for Peter Grant's men.

“If you take the 50-point barrier as what clubs are aiming for down at the bottom then Norwich should be able to get that with a bit to spare,” said Cottee.

“That's only three wins and that should make them safe. There will be a lot of tough games along the way but if they can get through this campaign then I think they will be a lot better next season.”

The former Norwich striker added that the Canaries cannot completely forget about talk of relegation as they have some tough games against Barnsley and Derby County coming up over the next week.

“They are not out of the woods yet,” said Cottee. “They are still only six points off the relegation zone so they will know there is still a bit of work to do but I'm certainly backing them to pull away from the drop zone.”

Cottee was impressed with the way Norwich ground out the victory against Luton despite falling behind twice against Mike Newell's men.

“They did really well, particularly in view of the fact they went 2-1 down. It would have been easy for them to roll over but they hung in there and got what they deserved.

“I'm always impressed by Darren Huckerby. When I was watching the match I was saying how Norwich needed to get him on the ball more and get him involved.”

Cottee reserved the highest praised for new kid on the block, Chris Martin, who scored his third senior goal at Luton.

“It's the first time I've seen Chris play and he certainly looks a very decent player. He led the line extremely well and looks a real prospect for the future. You can't talk about the game though without mentioning Simon Lappin's free-kick - what a great way to win a football match.”

Cottee spearheaded the City line himself for a brief spell under Bryan Hamilton in 2000 before leaving to take up a player-manager post at Barnet.

But the 41-year-old has fond memories of his time in Norfolk. “Norwich is a fantastic club with great support and I'm only sorry that I was not able to stay longer. It's a lovely place to play football.”
