The name of Darren Huckerby has once again been dangled tantalisingly in front of Norwich City fans hoping for a return of the Canaries legend.

Huckerby is currently playing for San Jose Earthquakes in America, but rumours of a return to Carrow Road have been bubbling under ever since he was unceremoniously dumped by former boss Glenn Roeder a year ago.

They continued last night when the question was raised almost inevitably at a fans' forum at the end of yesterday's annual club open day.

The 33-year-old has refused to commit himself either way, and City officials have been equally non-committal. But the fans still live in hope.

“For Darren to return he would have to be fit, the money would have to be there to employ him and the manager of the day would have to want him to return,” said chief executive Neil Doncaster.

“There are no other reasons why he should not return.”

Manager Bryan Gunn added: “He has been in regular contact with me. He is under contract to an American club until November, so he keeps telling me.

“We are constantly in touch.”

t The Norwich City Independent Supporters' Association fans' forum, due to have been held at Carrow Road tomorrow, has been postponed.
