Scottish Premier League boss Jim Jefferies is hoping he can succeed where others have failed - by getting the best out of Norwich City striker Ryan Jarvis on a regular basis.

The Kilmarnock manager watched the 21-year-old get off the mark and then predicted it would take him another month to hit top form.

Jarvis scored his first goal for the club to help the Ayrshire men to a 2-1 Clydesdale Bank Premier League win over Gretna at Fir Park.

But Jefferies feels the best is yet to come from the Fakenham youngster, who scored six goals for Leyton Orient in a loan spell last season after failing to figure in manager Peter Grant's plans.

Jarvis has not started two League games in a row for the Canaries since he was 16, and the last of his 35 senior outings - 25 of them as a substitute - came in the home game against Sheffield Wednesday last December,

He joined Killie just before the transfer window closed and his arrival proved timely as days later Steven Naismith joined Rangers and Gary Wales broke a bone in his foot.

“He only played one game in the reserves before we brought him here,” Jefferies said.

“He hasn't played at first team level for a wee while, so you have got to let him get adjusted and get his fitness going.

“We got 75 minutes out of him, where his movement was getting him in behind.

“He is probably learning that people challenge you more up here and you have got to handle that side of it.

“He has got a good touch, and he can pull you about. It will take about four or five games before you really see a quality player.

“But it was nice for him to get off the mark. With Naisy being away and Walesy being out injured, we are hoping he can get a partnership going with Nish.”
