Iceland youth international Isak Thorvaldsson is leaving Norwich City for his first loan experience, with the midfielder heading to League One until the end of the season.

The 18-year-old has scored once in 18 games for City's U23s this season, occasionally wearing the captain's armband, largely playing as a central attacking midfielder.

That included playing in two of the development squad's EFL Trophy group games, starting the 3-1 loss at Portsmouth and 2-1 win at Crawley, playing against senior opposition.

Now he heads to League One with Fleetwood Town, where the Lancashire side are 11th and six points adrift of the play-off places. Joey Barton's team host mid-table rivals Doncaster on Saturday.

Thorvaldsson has scored once in nine games at under-19 level for Iceland, also being named captain at that level, and was signed in the summer of 2017 at the same time as Irish striker Adam Idah - who has since progressed to City's first team.

He was signed from Icelandic third tier side Afturelding and was part of the under-18 squad which reached the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals in 2018, alongside players including Idah and Max Aarons.

The youngster spoke in October about his hopes of making progress this season, having scored seven goals in 26 games at U18 and U23 level last season for City, and also spoke about how he was being used in more of a defensive role at international level.

Fleetwood boss Barton told his club's website: "Isak is a player that we have been watching for a while, and when the chance came to bring him to our club, we jumped at it.

"He's a tough tacking midfielder, who will bring competition to our squad. He's impressed in Norwich's U23s despite only being 18, and we look forward to seeing him bring that form into our group."

Thorvaldsson becomes the 19th Norwich player currently out on loan and follows on from young left-back Caleb Richards joining National League side Yeovil until the end of the season, ahead of tonight's 11pm transfer deadline.

He wasn't in the City U23s' squad for tonight's home clash with Manchester United in Premier League Two, with the young Canaries beaten 2-1 at Carrow Road, after Gassan Ahadme had headed them in front in just the fourth minute.
