The international break is over and full focus can return to the Championship promotion push – with Norwich City’s players seemingly coming through national duty unscathed.

Ben Godfrey won his second cap for the England U20s this evening but it was the defender’s poor control which unfortunately allowed hosts Portugal to claim a 1-0 win in the Euro Elite League, with a goal just after the hour mark.

The Canaries prospect’s fine Championship form earned him two starts for Paul Simpson’s team but it was a forgettable fortnight for the U20s, also losing 3-1 at home to Poland on Thursday, when Godfrey also played the full match.

The Young Lions are due to participate in the prestigious Toulon Tournament in France in June but for the time being Godfrey can return his focus to the Canaries’ promotion push.

It was a frustrating fortnight for City centre-back Timm Klose as well, as he sat on the bench for two European Championship qualifiers for Switzerland, a 2-0 win in Georgia on Saturday and a 3-3 home draw with Denmark this evening.

That’s despite the experienced Norwich defender having played all of an excellent 5-2 win over World Cup semi-finalists Belgium in November, prior to the injury which has seen Godfrey playing ahead of him at City in recent months.

It looked like Klose may get his chance against Denmark, due to Newcastle’s Fabian Schar being concussed at the weekend, but it was Borussia Monchengladbach’s Nico Elvedo partnering a fellow Bundesliga player in defence tonight, Borussia Dortmund’s Manuel Akanji.

Earlier today, right-back Max Aarons won his seventh cap for the England U19s during a 2-2 draw with Denmark at St George’s Park.

And star striker Teemu Pukki played a prominent role in the opening goal as Finland won 2-0 in Armenia in Euro 2020 qualifying.

Canaries head coach Daniel Farke will now be looking forward to getting his full squad back together at Colney ahead of a tough trip to play-off chasing Middlesbrough on Saturday, a televised 5.30pm kick-off, with his team heading into the weekend four points clear at the top with eight games remaining.

The other first-team players in action during the break were left-back Jamal Lewis, playing all of two home wins for Northern Ireland, 2-0 over Estonia on Thursday and 2-1 against Belarus on Sunday in Euro 2020 qualifying.

Kenny McLean was spared Scotland’s 3-0 embarrassment in Kazakhstan, as an unused substitute, but played the full game and opened the scoring during a 2-0 win over San Marino on Sunday.

City U23s striker Adam Idah was also in action, being capped for the first time at U21 level by the Republic of Ireland and scoring twice in a 3-0 win over Luxembourg in Dublin.
