Canaries legend Iwan Roberts has put his name in the hat for an appearance in honour of his old strike partner - should the idea of a tribute match for Huckerby take off.

"I think that would be a good shout. If there was a game for Hucks to take his final chance, I'd definitely put my name forward for it - if they could find me a pair of shorts big enough that is," joked the former Wales striker.

"He rang me on Tuesday to tell me the news and I'm so disappointed for him.

"After all the thanks I got - I got two chances to say goodbye to the fans, the last home game and the Crewe away game, plus the civic reception - and he's not been given that.

"I do feel for him for that because if it wasn't for him we wouldn't have got promoted that year."

Roberts believes America could be one destination for Huckerby's next career move, although he admits a long commute up to Glasgow for a reunion with his former manager Gordon Strachan at Celtic could also be on the cards if recent history is anything to go by.

"He could have moved on at any stage. There were some big clubs interested in Darren and I know Celtic were very, very keen to get him up there. But he was very loyal to the club."

Clubs across the Atlantic are already clambering to bag the signature of Darren Huckerby to boost their chances of MLS success.

San Jose Earthquakes have registered their interest in the former Norwich City star, who was released by City boss Glenn Roeder last week - but they are behind Toronto FC in the queue to take Huckerby to the United States.

The Canadian club, which boasts two former Canaries in their books in Jim Brennan and Carl Robinson, have already filed a discovery claim to the league, who arrange all transfer dealings for the 14 current teams.

It effectively means San Jose are unable to make an official move for the player until Toronto decide what they want to do.

San Jose's general manager John Doyle said: "There is so much more that has to be done than saying, 'I like Darren Huckerby'. Does Darren Huckerby want to be here? Yes, we can want him but does he want us, does he want the MLS?"

The MLS season kicked off in March but runs until November, when the end of season play-offs are decided, although San Jose are already sitting routed to the bottom of the Western Conference having won only one of their first six games.

Earthquakes' coach Frank Yallop, who spent 13 years at Ipswich Town before leaving for America in 1996, confirmed San Jose were looking for players but said anyone coming into the club would need to be a man on a mission.

"You'd think there are thousands of players lined up to play here, MLS, but there's not," said Yallop. "There's a lot of issues you have to get through. I want someone who wants to be here, not doing us a favour by coming. I want to wait and I owe it to the team not to panic and just get anybody.

"The guys we have now work hard; we know we need more quality in certain positions, but that will come."
