Sean Raggett’s loan spell at Portsmouth has seen the defender make only two league appearances so far, with Pompey boss Kenny Jackett seeking to refine areas of the defenders game.

Jackett and his backroom staff have overseen a comprehensive reconditioning programme designed to improve all aspects of the Norwich City loanees game after a wretched 10 months that preceded his move to the south coast.

Raggett's injury woes have been constant since he arrived at Carrow Road, with the ex-Lincoln defender breaking his right ankle on two separate occasions.

Since arriving at City in 2017, the defender has had loan stints at Lincoln City, during their League Two title winning campaign and also with Paul Warne's Rotherham United. His loan spell at the New York Stadium was ended prematurely due to Raggett requring surgery on that ankle injury.

Now, his loan stint at Fratton Park has led to Jackett opting for caution declaring that nurturing the City star will aid his quest for a return to full match fitness.

He said: "We've done a lot of work with him, a lot of sprinting, turning, all those types of things which are aspects of centre-half play

"Whether that be physical, technical or video work - which is tactical - we try to cover everything to provide the information and work he needs," The ex-Millwall boss told The News in Portsmouth.

Raggett was handed only his second League One appearance in Saturday's game against Bolton Wanderers which coincided with Pompey's second league victory and a clean sheet.

Now the City defender will be hoping to make that position his own in a quest for continuity as he looks to progress his career.

Jackett was keen to praise the work rate of Raggett and highlighted why other players who aren't in the team should follow his lead.

"For any player out of the team, they need to know what is required to get back into the side." He continued: "He [Raggett] comes back, works in the gym, keeps monitoring his own fitness and has a good determination, which is great to see.

"You have to work on it in training and then, most importantly, be ready when the chance comes around.

"There has definitely been an improvement in Sean - and he is ready to give it his best, for sure."

Raggett's contract at Carrow Road expires this summer, and it remains unknown as to whether City will seek to extend the 25-year-olds stay in Norfolk beyond his current deal.
