This year's winner of the APFSCIL (Association of Provincial Football Supporters Clubs in London) 'Supporter of the Year' came as a big surprise; to the recipient that is.

Though a three-year season ticket holder, Maurice Sills 'only went to 13 away games last year' (his words, not mine). Maurice is 92. I had the pleasure of contacting Maurice's north London home to inform him of his award: “I don't understand why I've won it,” he told me. “There must have been many more worthy winners than me.”

Well, clearly APFSCIL didn't think so.

Incredibly, Maurice is a relatively 'young' Norwich City supporter, having only decided to follow the Canaries around 25 years ago. To this day, he considers himself an all round 'football supporter' and those of us from the capital who have had the pleasure to travel with Maurice to away games down the years will know that he usually chooses to sit close to the half way line rather than behind the goal.

We're talking about a man who saw his first game in the twenties (Crystal Palace against Notts County I believe), so I wouldn't dare argue with his footballing knowledge.

If Norwich aren't playing, the 'London Supporter of the Year' will probably make his way to Barnet or, possibly Finchley, so it's no exaggeration to say that Maurice has seen more football games that Delia's served hot dinners. And it's wonderful to see that his passion for the game is still sky high. What does Maurice have to say about the current crop of City players?

“Looks like we're on that same slippery slope as last year,” he laughed. “We win by the odd goal, and then lose by the odd goal.”

I can't argue with that.

It's been a tough start to the campaign and there's undoubtedly a lot of hard work still ahead.

Let us hope that some of the injuries can start to disappear and Gunny can work his magic in the loan market.

It's a close league this year and it really looks like no one team are going to run away with it, so there's still plenty of time for improvement.

There will be be one man from London who I know won't be getting too carried away whatever the result today - he's seen too much football to do that.

Hats off to a true gentleman and a great friend of the Capital Canaries.

Well deserved, Maurice.
