Peterborough's England U21 keeper Joe Lewis is plotting a showdown against his former Carrow Road employers - in the Championship.

United's club record £400,000 signing is putting any reunion plans firmly on hold for one more season after helping Posh seal promotion to League One with a 1-0 win at Hereford on Saturday.

Norwich were sucked firmly back into the Championship relegation fight after West Brom's Carrow Road weekend win, but the Broome keeper backs his old side to pull clear of danger.

“They're in a little bit of trouble but I think they will be OK,” said Lewis. “But they need to get a result on Saturday, at least a draw, because I don't think they will want to leave it to the last game of the season at Sheffield Wednesday. Everyone's next aim at Peterborough is to play in the Championship and, ideally, I'd love to play for Peterborough against Norwich in the Championship.”

Lewis, an England 'keeper at several age groups, said he had no regrets about his switch to London Road after never getting a first team appearance for City.

“It was a big decision but I didn't see myself getting any opportunities at Norwich,” he said. “Once I'd gone to Peterborough, looked at the set up and seen how ambitious they were, I had no doubts it was the right move.

“The chance to get first team football was too good to miss, and now I have the chance to play League One football. The fans have been very good to me, and the team has played very good football. The back four has been very solid, which helped me settle in. It's been good fun. In the main, I haven't had a great deal to do. But in the games where I have been called into action, I have been pleased with my performances.”

Lewis underlined his class with a clutch of top drawers save in the promotion-clinching 1-0 win at Hereford - the City youth product's 11th clean sheet in 20 games since a New Year London Road switch.

“Apart from the Bury game at home, that was the busiest I've been since I came here,” he said. “It would have been a disaster if we hadn't gone up with the quality of players we have in our dressing room. We remained confident even after last weekend's defeat by a very good Stockport side and I felt that showed in the way we played. The lads defended superbly in front of me though and we were well worth the win. We played very well in the first half and deserved to go in ahead. But in the second half they really came at us, they put on a couple of subs in Trevor Benjamin and Theo Robinson and caused us a lot of problems.

“It was a great day for everyone and there were plenty of Peterborough fans there. It was a shame we couldn't do it a week earlier against Stockport in front of the home crowd, but we'll take it.

“It was an interesting journey home, three hours on the bus. We stopped off in Hereford and got a few beers.”

Lewis believes Darren Ferguson's team will be a force to be reckoned with at a higher level.

“There is massive potential and it's a very young side,” he said. “For a player to come from non-League football like Aaron McLean and score 31 goals is brilliant. Players like George Boyd and Craig Mackail Smith are in their early 20s and they're only going to get better next season. There's a good mix in the team and great team spirit.”
