Norwich City's young goalkeeper Joe Lewis may have to play in a Petr Cech style skull cap after suffering an injury described by a physio as the "worst he'd ever seen".

Lewis, who is currently on loan at Morecombe, was involved in a sickening clash of heads during his side's League Two clash at Rotherham on Saturday.

The 20-year-old, spent a night in hospital accompanied by his father Mike who was watching the game, after colliding with Chris O'Grady.

Lewis, who remained conscious throughout, received around seven minutes of treatment on the pitch before he was taken to hospital with a major and shoulder injury.

Morecombe physio, Dave Edge said he had never seen such a bad injury.

"Joe suffered a major cut from the top of his nose to the back of his head and it was extremely deep," Edge said. "We knew it was bad as soon as it happened and the reaction of the players also indicated he needed treatment quickly.

"Some of the lads who went over to see if he was OK had to turn away because it looked that bad but thankfully he is OK."

Edge said the injury to Lewis, who was released from hospital on Sunday to return home to Norwich for a few days, meant he may have to play in a skull cap similar to the one worn by Petr Cech at Chelsea.

Shrimps' assistant boss Mark Lillis was also sickened by the injury.

He said: "I have been involved in football for more than 30 years now and that is without doubt the worst looking injury I have seen. I was sick to the stomach and gutted for the lad because he has been fantastic for us."

As well as his facial injury Lewis damaged his shoulder in the challenge and experts will assess him this week.

"He hasn't broken any bones, which is good news but we will have to wait and see the full extent of the injury," Edge said.

Norwich City physio Neal Reynolds said the stopper was due in to Colney for assessment this week.

"I've spoken to Joe's dad and also the Morecombe physio and he's back in Norwich now. It's more of a concussion issue and he's got a huge cut on his head, so that's the main issue at the moment. He will be coming in in the next couple of days and we'll take a look of him. But he wasn't knocked out completely and he's up and walking around fine now."
