Southern League Premier Division: King's Lynn 2, Chesham United 0

King's Lynn scored late in each half to secure a vital Southern League Premier Division victory against bottom-of-the-table Chesham United at The Walks.

Goals from Sam McMahon on the stroke of half-time and Matt O'Halloran five minutes from time were enough to beat Luther Blissett's men.

Blissett returned to Norfolk - after playing for Fakenham Town some years ago - but now as manager of Lynn's opponents.

Lynn were hoping to extend their seven-game unbeaten run, which had seen them move into third in the table, while the visitors were bottom.

Chesham were first to threaten and after six minutes it was only a double save from Benstead in the Lynn goal that saved the home side.

A couple of minutes later, two free-kicks from Lynn were scrambled away but the home side were finding the rock-hard surface on the stand side of the pitch difficult to play their usual level of football on, whereas the visitors' more direct style was proving more suitable in the opening exchanges.

A third consecutive heavy tackle by United defenders went unpunished by a somewhat lenient referee and on each occasion the free-kicks were cleared.

O'Halloran had a good chance a few yards out but fired weakly wide as Lynn began to get on top.

Nolan was next to test United 'keeper McCarthy with a couple of strikes, but without enough power.

At last the official brought out his yellow card following yet another foul by a visiting player, but again the kick was cleared upfield, out of danger.

Defty then sent a hard cross towards McCarthy, who was injured and replaced by substitute 'keeper Brown.

Chesham managed to force a couple of corners just before the break.

But, seconds from the whistle, McMAHON touched the ball home to put Lynn ahead after a hectic scramble in the Chesham goalmouth.

There was a scrappy start to the second half with neither side putting a decent move together.

After 60 minutes, Smith put McMahon through, but he was blocked out for a corner, which was missed at the far post by the in-rushing West and went out for a throw-in.

Having let so many fouls go unpunished, the match official then comically cautioned a Chesham forward for kicking the ball away. Needless to say, this was greeted with hilarity by the home crowd.

Passes were continually being overhit by Lynn as they pushed to increase their lead.

After 75 minutes, Lee Charles came on for Nolan.

Defty was hauled down again after 80 minutes, just outside the penalty area, but McMahon fired the kick too high.

Anselin had an effort blocked and Smith was closed out when running at goal.

Peters then replaced Anselin for the last few minutes and almost got in on goal straightaway, but the flag went up for offside.

With five minutes to go, a good crossfield move by Lynn ended with O'HALLORAN placing the ball past Brown to put the result beyond doubt.
