The clinical nature of Manchester City’s 5-0 win and Norwich City’s failure to take their chances summed up where the Canaries fell short in the Premier League for Onel Hernandez.

The winger had an early goal correctly ruled out by VAR for offside and Teemu Pukki wasted a big chance in the first half, with youngster Josh Martin also missing a good opportunity late on.

With a club record losing streak extended to 10 league games, a Premier League record low of seven away goals and the lowest point tally of any Canaries season, the agony is finally over and attentions can turn to next season after a difficult spell.

“You can see we did have chances in today’s game, not only in this game, but a lot of games,” said Hernandez after the final-day defeat. “But if you don’t score and you are not effective and then you concede. These teams, if they got a 100pc chance they score.

“They lead the game and that’s how it has been all of the season. We concede goals, we don’t score goals and that’s why we can’t stay in the position we want to stay because at the end of the day goals win games.”

The Cuban thought he’d scored his second of the season when he was celebrating in the eighth minute, only for VAR to cut the celebrations short.

“In the moment it is very hard to see it, I was thinking that I was not offside and they told me that maybe my toe was offside and that upsets me in that situation,” he added.

“I was really happy in that moment to score a goal but that was not how it was today, it was not the day for that.”

City’s injuries and suspensions meant Daniel Farke was able to name only eight substitutes, with two of them goalkeepers, as Gabriel Jesus and a wonder strike from Kevin De Bruyne put the hosts 2-0 up.

Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and De Bruyne put the icing on the cake in the second half.

“The injuries and the red cards we had last week, Emi Buendia is important for us and can create with his magic,” Hernandez continued.

“But at the end of the day I don’t look for excuses about things, this year we were maybe not good enough and not effective enough.

“We have to accept that and learn about that – and come back stronger.”
