Marco Stiepermann was happy to score his favourite goal – and with the message sent by Daniel Farke’s new Norwich City contract.

Fresh from the news the City head coach has committed his future – and that of his backroom staff – to the club until 2022, Stiepermann was on hand to score a fabulous solo goal that sent City on their way to a 3-2 win over Hull.

It returned City to the top of the Championship with nine games to play; their trip to Rotherham on Saturday ringing in the final international break of the campaign.

“Yeah, I think it was my best so far – maybe in my career as well – so I’m really proud of it,” said the 28-year-old.

“I think the whole team should get the headlines for this one. Of course we tried our best, in our individual performances. But we can only live with our individual performance when the team is doing well, and that was this.”

It also proved the perfect way to sign off what could prove a significant day, with Farke ending months of speculation over his future – albeit with what always seemed the most likely result.

“I expected this to be honest,” smiled Stiepermann. “But I’m really happy for that. I think he really deserved a new contract here at the club. He worked really well with us all together. Hopefully now the time goes on like it is now.

“I think for the fans it’s a great message that the boss stays. I think now we can work further on with this message, maybe a little bit for us it’s a calmed down situation when the boss signs a new contract – so it’s good.

“I think for every one of us, it was not a good first season, a hard season. We all improved together and then in the second season, I think we are one of the best possession teams and obviously we are top of the league.”

As for the game itself, Stiepermann was well aware things were not as simple as they should have been – City twice seeing a two-goal lead halved in the final moments before half- and full-time.

“It is always exciting for fans and a little bit unnecessary before half-time, and nearly to the end of the game – so there were things we didn’t need but in total, I think it was an absolutely deserved game that we win,” added Stiepermann.

“Of course there was a little bit of pressure because both Leeds and Sheffield United won on Tuesday night as well, and I don’t think we have to talk about pressure because we should just enjoy the moment in this situation we are.

“We expected a tough game and it was actually. But at the end we won the game and we are back on top of the league.”
