Easing to a 3-0 friendly victory at Lowestoft Town was another step in the right direction for Norwich City Under-23s boss Matt Gill.

The young Canaries started their Premier League Two campaign with a 2-1 home defeat to Brighton at Colney and a 4-0 loss at Middlesbrough before a Glenn Middleton double led the way to a 2-0 win over Stoke at Carrow Road.

Goals from recent signings Savvas Mourgos and Adam Phillips were added to by Devonte Aransibia against Lowestoft, who play at step three of the non-league pyramid, to help continue that momentum.

“The lads applied themselves really well,” said Gill. “To win the game is not the most important thing but we want to get into a winning mentality.

“We beat Stoke at Carrow Road last week and we’ve carried that on so that’s good. Some of the stuff we were looking at was good for us coaches to see, pleasing to get a couple of good goals as well.”

Those impressive strikes came from classy midfielders Mourgos and Phillips, formerly of Arsenal and Liverpool respectively, either side of half-time.

“Obviously Savvas (Mourgos) has got a lovely left foot, very technically gifted, a great strike and the sort of thing I would expect from him because he’s been doing it in training regularly,” Gill said. “Adam strikes a lovely ball as well, I think we’ve seen with his lovely range of passing that he strikes good balls so it’s nice for him to get on the score-sheet playing a bit higher today.

“Adam’s been with us for about five weeks now and has applied himself extremely well, got himself fitter than he has been for a while and has been a really good acquisition for the club.”

City fans also got to see two of the other recent additions to the U23s squad, strikers Pierre Fonkeu and Tristan Abrahams.

“It was great to have them both on the pitch at the same time tonight,” the former City midfielder continued. “It gives us a real threat going forward, having two boys who are willing runners, big battering rams for the team really.

“I called them both the drivers of the train because they can drive us forward, so it was really pleasing to see them both on the pitch and it’s exciting for those two to get a good understanding and we’ll see where that takes us.”
