Gary Setchell has been appointed caretaker manager of Wisbech Town while former manager Roy McManus revealed he would be prepared to talk to the board about taking the job on a permanent basis.

Steve Taylor quit as Fenmen manager at the weekend following their 3-0 home defeat against Harwich and Parkeston.

McManus was hugely popular with the Fenmen fans when he took charge of the club last season and steered them from a relegation scrap to mid-table respectability.

He resigned at the end of last season after becoming frustrated at a lack of communication from the board and the fact that the board was considering scrapping the reserve team to cut costs.

McManus said: "I'll not be applying for the job but if the board approaches me I'd be willing to talk about it. I see most of the board members on a weekly basis and am good friends with some, so there's no deep problems between us."

McManus, who will be 57 next week, has been involved with the Fenmen since he was a 10-year-old ball boy and has since been a player and manager.

He said: "Wisbech Town are in my heart and I won't sit by and see the club suffer.

"The manager's job at Wisbech is a lot harder than people think, but I felt the team did well the last time I was in charge."

But McManus believes Setchell may be offered the job permanently.

Setchell, 33, has Football League experience with Rushden & Diamonds, helping them reach the 2002 Division Three play-off final at the Millennium Stadium. He played in the FA Trophy Final at Wembley for Kettering Town and has also played for Swaffham Town, King's Lynn, Tamworth and Fakenham.

He joined Wisbech as player/assistant manager at the beginning of the season.

McManus said: "If Gary does well he could take it permanently.

"Gary's a good man and has experience of playing at professional clubs.

"Some may argue that he is too inexperienced in management, but he did a good job when he took charge of the team at the Wroxham game and he will have the respect of the dressing room."
