McVeigh keen to take chance

City forward Paul McVeigh has spoken of his new lease of life with Burnley - after his goals in successive home games helped steer them towards Championship safety.

The Clarets have taken 10 points from four games since McVeigh signed on loan for the rest of the season, three successive victories bringing a dramatic end to a run of 19 league games without a win.

The former Northern Ireland international has quickly found favour at Turf Moor after scoring in last week's 4-0 win over Plymouth and Monday's 2-0 victory over Cardiff, results that came either side of a 1-0 success at Birmingham.

Now he is calling on Burnley to end the season with a bang following their stunning revival.

McVeigh is looking for more points between now and May to give the club a platform on which to build, though he will be ineligible under the terms of his loan for the Canaries' visit for next Tuesday's rearranged Championship match.

He told the club's official website, www.burnleyfootballclub.premiumtv.co.uk: “When I decided to come to Burnley, I didn't realise the run we were in.

“But I thought it was only a matter of time because of the quality in the dressing room.

“I don't think we were ever looking at relegation at all.

“The points tally for the last four games has been exceptional and we're trying to finish as high up the table as possible now.

“I think if we carry on as we are, we feel we could beat anybody and that's what we want to do.”

McVeigh's two goals ended a run of nearly 13 months without scoring, stretching back to City's 2-2 draw at Leeds in March last year.

And he admitted his lack of match practice with Norwich this season - six starts and 17 appearances as a substitute - had left him with some catching up to do.

He said: “I was tired at the end of the game because I haven't played too many games this year, but I was quite happy with the goal and delighted with the win.

“I needed to get games as soon as possible because I am out of contract in the summer and Burnley gave me a chance and it's working out well.

“The manager here has given me a chance and I am just glad to be playing and the goals are starting to come. I think all it needed was probably a few fresh faces around here and a change of luck.”

Burnley have not conceded a goal in four matches, and visit Leeds on Saturday.

“Even though it didn't work out against Luton, we didn't get beaten and the last three games have been great to play in. It's just what the team needed.”

McVeigh is not the only on-loan striker banging in the goals at present with Ryan Jarvis - at Leyton Orient - scoring six goals in 10 games for the League One side. Meanwhile, former Canaries favourite Jamie Cureton has impressed for play-off candidates Colchester this season, hitting 22 goals.
