Steven Naismith wants to finish his career in his native Scotland – but not before he settles some unfinished business with Norwich City.

Naismith moved to Carrow Road from Everton 18 months ago but by his own admission has failed to live up to his reputation. The 30-year-old has two years left on his contract and it would be no surprise if City allowed him to leave - at the right price – to help reduce the wage bill.

But while Naismith would like to see out his days north of the border, most likely with Rangers, he knows he has work to do in Norfolk first.

“I would never say never, because if I was coming back to Scotland then personally I would love it [returning to Rangers],” he said.

“There’s a lot of water under the bridge, they’ve moved forward under a new manager and, at the moment, I feel I still owe Norwich something.

“Last season wasn’t a great season and I’ve probably not played my best football in that time. I want to repay what they’ve done for me.

“I’ll definitely play [in Scotland] before I finish, I love the football, it’s where I started. So I will come back and play in Scotland.”

While Rangers may be a likely future destination for the attacking midfielder in future, it is not clear whether Ibrox will play host to Norwich’s Graham Dorrans.

The transfer rumour mill has moved into overtime with talk of Rangers’ bids for the City midfielder – figures of more than £1m are well wide of the actual mark, but now relegated Sunderland could be about to gazump Rangers. According to the Daily Mail the Black Cats, who have new boss Simon Grayson at the helm, want the 30-year-old.

Grayson’s move to the Stadium of Light has left a vacancy at Preston and former Canaries boss Alex Neil – the man who brought Naismith and Dorrans to Carrow Road – might be about to fill it.

The Sun claims Neil is on their wish-list and that the two parties held talks over the weekend.

Neil has been out of work since leaving Carrow Road in March, but faces stiff competition – former boss David Moyes and ex-player Graham Alexander, now at Scunthorpe, are among the front-runners, with another former City boss, Paul Lambert, also in the frame.
