New Wisbech Town director Terry Back has quit the Fenland Park outfit after being snubbed in his bid to replace outgoing chairman Barry Carter at the club's recent annual meeting.

Paul Brenchley - current chairman of Outwell's Village Hall and Playing Field committee - was appointed to replace Carter ahead of Wisbech's impending ground share at Outwell while the club's proposed stadium is built.

Former Wisbech boss Back was unable to attend the meeting due to work commitments but has now announced his intention to stand down after narrowly being elected to the Ridgeons Premier Division club's board.

He said: "I could have made a fortune for Wisbech and taken them up to a higher level of football.

"I had plans to bring some proper business people to the board and to market the club properly but a few people felt threatened by it all. You can't run a club by selling raffle tickets."

Businessman Back had previously been chairman of Enfield, Aylesbury and Waltham Forest. He said: "At Waltham Forest we made a lot of money when we allowed a film crew to come into our ground and film a Bollywood movie.

"We got £800 a day for three months from that. I'm sure we could have done something similar at Wisbech. I've seen many football clubs bring in money by buying property and renting it out and I would have looked into doing that."

Newly-elected chairman Brenchley met Ridgeons League officials to inspect facilities at Outwell ahead of Town's first Ridgeons Premier game tomorrow against CRC.

He said: "It's crucial that we take things one stage at a time. We're in the financial trouble we're in because we've tried to run before we can walk. The first thing to sort out the new ground.

"There's no point building half a stadium and then not being able to pay for the rest of it.

"Barry's kept this club going for the last six or seven years and if hadn't been for him Wisbech would have gone into administration."

Carter will remain as the club's treasurer while Colin Garwood has taken on the new director of football role.
