Christoph Zimmermann insists Norwich City went “all in” for the win during their 0-0 draw at Newcastle, knowing that one point wasn’t enough to alter their Premier League survival hopes.

While the defender felt the Canaries had played well enough to take all three points at St James' Park, he knows that draws are not enough to salvage this season.

"We were here to win and I think you could see at the end as well that we were going all in to win it, obviously without being stupid and getting Tim (Krul) up front as well," the German said.

"But in all measures that we could we were trying to go forward in the second half, when we were very much on the front foot.

"First half as well, probably not as much as in the second half, it appears to everybody here that we were going for three points and not just settling for one point.

"So therefore we cannot just be happy even with a clean sheet away from home, we're not playing for clean sheets, we're playing for three points."

The goalless draw left the Canaries seven points from safety with 13 games remaining, ahead of a two-week winter break which is followed by a home clash with unbeaten champions-elect Liverpool.

"Straight after a game like this, when I think everybody got the feeling that we should have three points from here, it's always quiet in the dressing room," Zimmermann explained.

"On the one hand, yes we're happy performance-wise and the supporters you could see that they seemed to appreciate the performance and they were standing there the whole game, so I thought they have seen a decent game from us.

"But not to get the three points once again, it sounds a bit like the story of our season, that we are playing well, the performance is good, but we don't manage to get the right results from it."

Daniel Farke's team had beaten the Magpies 3-1 at Carrow Road earlier in the season but Steve Bruce's side moved up to 10th as they continued to edge their way to survival with a cautious defensive approach.

Zimmermann added: "We knew before the game that with the way Newcastle play it might suit us and we've also seen in the first game of the season that we can beat them.

"It suits us to play here and the opportunities that we've got, we knew that we would get enough to score and to win the game, and I think that's what we've done again.

"We were talking even before the game that we need three points here and we need to win this game, at half-time we were saying the same again and I was saying that we can't just be happy with one."
