Norwich City midfielder Youssef Safri insists the Canaries have “no choice” but to claim all three points against Leeds United on Saturday.

Defeat to Wolves in midweek left the Canaries just four points outside the Championship relegation zone and Saturday's match with Leeds has suddenly become a relegation six-pointer for Peter Grant's side.

Another loss at home to the division's basement boys would really set alarm bell ringing but Safri revealed he is not even contemplating such a situation.

“Norwich have got top players here and it's a shame to be in this situation for the club and the fans,” said the Moroccan international. “We played really well on Tuesday and worked really hard but the silly thing was that we didn't win the game.

“We can't wait for the game on Saturday - we haven't got a choice against Leeds, we have to get the three points whatever way we can get it.”

The 30-year-old thinks that talk of relegation is far too premature as there is too much quality within the City ranks to drop into League One.

“I don't think Norwich can go down this season whatever because we have got good players and a good squad. We have to believe in ourselves and do what we did last Tuesday, but obviously we have to score.

“I don't think anyone can talk about relegation at this stage. If we start to talk about relegation we will lose confidence in ourselves. We have to go up in the table and don't deserve this situation to be honest.

“The table doesn't lie though. We've got good players, that's why I'm very surprised to see us where we are. If we can score more goals we will be fine.”

Injuries and suspensions to the likes of Robert Earnshaw and new signing Chris Brown have not helped the Canaries up front and Safri believes it is time for other areas of the team to chip in with their fair share of goals.

“There are other strikers apart from Earnie and Dublin who can score goals as well. Of course we miss them but there are players who can score goals in this side, even in defence.”

The additions to the squad of Mark Fotheringham and Simon Lappin have given the whole squad a lift according to Safri ahead of their first training session together yesterday.

Despite Fotheringham arriving as a central midfielder, Safri said that competition for places can only be healthy for the Canaries.

“We already have a good squad but, to make it bigger and get some competition, it is important to bring in new faces and challenge us all. Everybody must work harder for their place.

“The signings will also give us more confidence and maybe they will give us a healthier squad as well. They seem good lads and hopefully they can adapt quickly and I'm sure all the lads will make them very welcome. Hopefully they will play a big role on Saturday.”
