Marco Stiepermann is ready to be unleashed on Swindon Town in Norwich City’s League Cup first round bow.

Daniel Farke plans to fast-track his latest German recruit into the squad for Tuesday’s Carrow Road cup test (KO 7:45pm).

Stiepermann’s versatility could earn him a debut, just days after completing his move from Bundesliga Two club VfL Bochum. Compatriot Tom Trybull is unlikely to be involved as he looks to step up his fitness.

“Marco needs some days to get used to our philosophy but I think he is ready. It could be that he is in the squad, probably not in the starting line up,” said Farke. “He is a really good all rounder. He started as a number 10 in his career and in recent seasons he can be a holding midfielder or even in the defensive positions down the left. He is very experienced and able to cover different positions. It is one of the reasons I think to take him with us. He had seven or eight Bundesliga appearances under (Jurgen) Klopp at Dortmund earlier in his career.

“With Tom he needs one or two weeks for his physical condition. He had to work the first period of pre-season by himself so he needs some more training with the group. That is a little bit different to Marco, who had many games in pre-season at a good level. For Tom it is a little earlier to bring him to the pitch.”

Farke may use the Robins’ visit to get Ivo Pinto and Wes Hoolahan more action, following a disrupted pre-season, but Russell Martin is set to be rested after overcoming a foot injury to play at Fulham.

“He took a blow on his foot and our physios were working nearly 24 hours a day. He played with a lot of pain and some injections and showed a great attitude,” said Farke. “We have to think a little bit about whether it is the right decision to bring him for this game. If I am honest, I think about giving him a little break because he missed the first two weeks of pre-season.

“Russell is a brilliant idol for the players. When he is injured or not on the pitch he is still so important for the group. A smart, intelligent guy who cares about his team mates and the younger lads in the academy.

“With Ivo and Wes normally they would need a little bit longer. Wes is a bit further along. They are not 100pc yet. They were important last season. They will be this.”
