Alex Tettey has experienced a great deal during his eight seasons at Norwich City but the midfield stalwart admits playing with nine men for over 45 minutes was a brutal new scenario to tackle.

With Emi Buendia and Josip Drmic sent off prior to Chris Wood opening the scoring during first half injury-time for Burnley, the Canaries battled to stay in the game, only for Ben Godfrey to mistakenly stroke the ball into his own net in the 80th minute to bring a cruel end to the hosts’ resistance.

“That’s my first time in professional football that I’ve been in the Premier League or a game at a high level with nine guys,” said the former Norway international.

“To be fair, we dealt with it really well. If it wasn’t for the own goal we’d have gone 45 minutes at Premier League level with nine guys and not conceded. Which considering everything else that has happened this season, was remarkable to be fair.”

The already relegated Canaries fell to a ninth consecutive league defeat, against a stubborn Burnley team which have now lost just one of their last 15 top-flight games.

Tettey explained of City’s second half attempt: “You try to rest with the ball as much as possible, sometimes you get to have passes, sometimes you have to clear it and it comes back to you again and they come again.

“What we can say is that this team (Burnley) were a team that stick to what they want to do, so it wasn’t pass, pass, pass, break you down, make you run - they wanted to get it wide and cross, which made it a bit easier at times for us to defend, which was good.

“But I think if we had played a team with a different philosophy than these guys I think it would have been really bad.

“But fair play to us, I can only say positive things about the guys who were on the pitch today, after playing nine against 11.”

Tettey made his 100th Premier League appearance for Norwich during Tuesday’s 1-0 loss at Chelsea but admits the abject failure of this season makes it the most painful of his three relegations.

“There’s nothing compared to this season. I’ve never had the lowest amount of points,” he added, before concluding with a sigh: “We tried.”
